Parish Council Minutes

September 15, 2008

Present:  Msgr Duffy, Fr. Peter, Jack, Melody, Myrna, Alma,

Mary Pat, Maxine Kohler (visitor from Parish Finance Com.)

 

I.            Msgr. Duffy opened meeting with a prayer.

 

II.     Minutes were read from June 16, August 18 and 25 meetings.

 

III.     Old Business

A.  Ministry Fair Day heads are Jack and Myrna.  Date is

Oct 11/12.  Msgr suggested that the Knights be asked to have

breakfast available.  It was noted that Fair needs to be after all

 masses, including the Spanish mass.  The deacon will be contacted   

to coordinate with the Hispanic community.

B.  English as a Second Language Program (ESL) is being considered.  Judy Bundy from Hulsey Public Library initiated contact to suggest having classes at St John.  A council member offered to help as needed. 

C. The renovation of the rectory has been completed.

D.            Msgr will check with the parish office to about pest problems in the parish hall.

E:  Msgr will confer with artist about Statue/Stain Glass location conflict to get input.

 

IV.            New Business

A.   A parish council Mission Statement was presented by a council member in order to state our vision.  (See attached Mission Statement.)  Officers chosen for Parish Council:  Chairman Jack Harvey; Vice Chairman Myrna Wharton; Secretary Mary Pat Samuels.  The council wants to be more visible in the parish in order to be of more service.    Name tags for all members were distributed. 

B.   The Ministry to the Sick and Homebound needs more members and more access to Catholics in the community, esp. the retirement homes. 

C.   Child Care was not discussed due to no new input.

D.   The Financial Statement for the church was presented by a Finance council member and explained.

E.    The Budget for the church was presented and explained.

F.    To avoid scheduling problems, an Activity/Event Calendar for parish always needs to be used.  It is critical for all groups to schedule through the parish office secretary to avoid conflicts. Also, using the parish web page more to get information to the parishioners is important.

G.   Oversight of the activities and events for parish is shared by Msgr Duffy and Fr Peter.  (Financial matters must go ultimately through Msgr.)

H.   Fr Peter is on site and available.

I.       Open Floor:  Hurricane:  Msgr said St John’s is waiting for direction from the diocese in plans to help with hurricane evacuees.  Locally, the Food Pantry is available.  Our parish needs to be involved in sending Pantry food.  

J.      Open Floor:  Parish Hall:  Msgr will check with the coordinator of the hall about the cleaning after events and about rental policies.  It was noted that No alcohol is to be served when minors are present.  

K.   Open Floor:  Water Upstairs in Parish Center Bathrooms:  It needs to be checked for odor.  (Check downstairs also.)

L.    Open Floor:  Ray Hopson has resigned for personal reasons.  We accepted with regrets.  A replacement needs to be considered.

      

V.               Suggestion Box Items:   No suggestions discussed.

St. John the Apostle Parish Council:  Mission Statement

 

The Parish Council exists to guide, develop, and serve the needs of the faith community of St. John the Apostle.

 

Purpose: 

·        Assist the Pastor in setting the overall vision of the Parish.

·        Develop the strategies and goals for the parish and operational functions consistent with the vision.

·        Investigate significant issues to the Parish and formulate/propose practical conclusions.

 

Responsibilities:

·        Give counsel to the Pastor regarding pastoral activities of the parish.

·        Review major financial commitments for consistency with Parish vision and objectives.

·        Foster the pastoral life and ministry of the Parish.
