Food Pantry Ministry

Return to Committees

The Emergency Food Pantry is sponsored by the Greater Terrell Shared Ministries. Twenty-seven Terrell churches participate in donating specific items of food for the pantry. In addition, they purchase other needed items from local merchants. The Food Pantry also secures food items from the Food Bank in Dallas, TX. The Emergency Food Pantry, located on Jones Street in Terrell, in the Share Center,  is open on Thursdays from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. The center is closed on holidays. The participating churches have volunteers who assist the Brin Street Church of Christ, in providing services at the Food Pantry. Each participating church donates specific items; St. John the Apostle Catholic Church has been assigned tuna. However, we will take whatever canned or boxed groceries (nonperishable) that the parishioners donate. One of the St. John representatives collects these food items on as  "as provided" basis and delivers them to the Food Pantry. The Food Pantry also welcomes monetary gifts.

If a person is requesting financial assistance, that person is referred to the Department of Human Services, located in Kaufman; if the person is transient, he/she is referred to the Terrel Police Services, located at 201 E. Nash, for financial assistance.

In Addition, some canned or boxed groceries (nonperishable) are donated to the Lakes Regional MHMR food pantry, which supplies food to clients of that agency who are in need of emergency food items.

Terrell State Hospital Ministry

The Terrell State Hospital ministry is composed of monthly Mass (4th Thursday of each month in 11:00 a.m.).  Deacon Jim Starr is in charge of the Monthly Mass -- 3 different priests say this Mass on a rotating basis. This Mass is available to patients and staff of the State Hospital, as well as guests who may want to partake of this service. (Deacon Jim Starr can give you the exact information on this mass.)

The Golden Years (over 50 Club)

St. John the Apostle Catholic Church

Terrell, Texas 75160

St. John the Apostle Catholic Church’s Golden Years is an active senior citizens group which meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month in the Parish Hall. We enjoy fellowship, and have an informative and/or entertaining program at each meeting, followed by a covered dish lunch. All senior citizens are invited to attend.

The day’s events are scheduled as follows:

10:00 a.m. Mass in the new church

11:00 a.m. Guest Speaker

12:00 p.m. Pot luck lunch served until 1:00 p.m.

1:00 p.m. Bingo games until 2:00 p.m.

Guest speakers address topics of special interest to the senior citizens of our parish. Speakers have included Father Weber, Father Michael, Father Jonathan, community leaders, police officers, local business leaders as well as pastoral leaders in the community.

The group has 2 community activities annually chosen by its members in the fall for the benefit of another civic agency.

Previous events include the following:

Spring 2003 food drive with nonperishable items donated to the town pantry.

Fall 2003 project consisted of collecting 325 pieces of costume jewelry, cleaned by members and readied for presentation to the Volunteer Council of Terrell State Hospital and provided to patients.

Spring 2004 food drive netted over 700 cans/boxes of nonperishable foods given to the pantry.

Future activities include:

1. This year’s fall project involves the group members donating money on a monthly basis. These monies are to be donated to an elementary school in our community for the purchase of books as needed for the groups’ fall project.

2. Day trips are scheduled twice yearly for fun and relaxation to the Isle of Capri in Shreveport.

Senior Council: Lee Wilde, Ida Fisher, Josephine Jones, Mike Fisher, and Charlie Wilde.
